Connecting The Dots

It is another wild week in the Trump regime. On 1 November, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP — commonly called food stamps) will cease to operate for a lack of funds. There is an emergency fund of roughly six billion dollars in the Department of Agriculture, which is responsible for the program, but they insist they cannot release the money, even as the United States provides roughly 40 billion dollars in aid to Argentina. Perhaps MAGA actually stands for Make Argentina Great Again. Clearly Trump cares little for the American people. He only cares about his personal well-being by collecting money for himself and his family and being treated as royalty. To wit, if I may bring it up, he is suing the Department of Justice (DOJ) for 230 million dollars for pain and lost income relating to his indictments following his actions in attempting to overthrow the government and for stealing classified documents and storing them in his bathroom at Mar-a-Lago. The people making that decision are his personal defense attorneys that are now leading the DOJ. That money is taxpayer money. Let’s also not forget that during the shutdown, demolition of the White House continues for construction of a 300 million dollar ballroom. But we cannot feed 42 million Americans, and we do not care about the small grocers, farmers and others whose livelihoods depend on serving the people that use SNAP.
About that ballroom….
I am not a math major, but 300 million dollars for a ballroom works out to be 3,333.00 dollars a square foot. I have read that most hotel ballrooms max out at about 1,000.00 dollars a square foot for even the most luxurious locations. Additionally, reports indicate that a “patriot” donated 130 million dollars to the Pentagon, supposedly to help pay the military during the shutdown. That sounds great, but it works out to about 6 hours worth of pay. (Incidentally, a private individual paying the military — hmm, would that not make them mercenaries?) So what gives? What few people are talking about is that under the now destroyed East Wing of the White House was the Presidential Emergency Operations Center (PEOC) — also known as a bunker. It was originally built as a bomb shelter during World War II. It has been updated over the years with ever more sophisticated equipment. Most famously in recent times, it is where Vice President Dick Cheney was rushed by the Secret Service during the terrorist attacks on 9/11.
It seems to me that when Trump says he needs to upgrade the East Wing, he is really talking about having a PEOC that meets his gilded standards, like 130 million dollars of gold. You know, a command bunker worthy of any self-respecting autocrat as all of his authoritarian buddies have — historically we know how well those bunkers for dictators work out in the long run. I opine that the 130 million dollars donated to the Pentagon is not for paying the troops but for helping to pay for a grand bunker. (The patriot, by the way, is thought to be Timothy Mellon, a billionaire member of the Mellon banking family and the bank is under investigation for its connections to Jeffrey Epstein. It gets “curiouser and curiouser.”)
Meanwhile, in the Caribbean Sea, and now in the Pacific Ocean, the Trump regime continues to order the murder of alleged drug smugglers. They have yet to offer even a shred of evidence to certify their assertions and not even members of Congress can get a straight answer even as they have oversight of the military and its use. Assuming for a minute that they are in fact drug smugglers — and as I have explained in previous posts I do not think most are drug smugglers — it is still unlawful under U.S. and international law to simply blow up boats and murder people just because the president says so. It is the equivalent of standing on a street corner in Huntsville Alabama and someone points at you and claims you are drug dealer and the police shoot you on sight. Or is that the point?
Admiral Alvin Holsey, USN the head of U.S. Southern Command that is responsible for Latin America and the Caribbean resigned earlier this month only one year into a normal three year tour of duty. Reports indicate that he retired early because of his concern over the use of force against unidentified boats and would not go along with the policy. At last! Someone spoke up. I wish more senior military officers would push back. Maybe they are and we just do not hear about it, but they need to re-invigorate the over two hundred year tradition that the military is non-political and takes an oath to support and defend the Constitution, not the whims of one man. Trump continues to call it “my military” and make political speeches with uniformed military as a back drop, just like it is some kind of campaign rally. Someone needs to make it clear that the military is not his to play with.
Now, we are told that in addition to the numerous Navy and Marine units already in the Caribbean Sea, it is necessary to send the entire Ford Carrier Strike Group to the Caribbean to stop the flow of drugs into the U.S. The fact is that most drug deaths in the U.S. are from fentanyl which comes primarily from Mexico via land and smuggled mostly by U.S. citizens, and that it is made from precursors from China. Colombia and Venezuela are more into the cocaine business to Europe. Let’s do a little more math. Trump says that each boat they destroy saves 25,000 American lives that would otherwise die of an overdose. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) says that there were 73,000 drug overdoses in the year ending in April, 2025. The Secretary of Defense claims to have sunk fourteen boats at the loss of at least 57 lives. That means, according to Trump, that 350,000 American lives have been saved. There should be no more deaths for at least four and a half more years. All of it is preposterous of course.
Speaking of preposterous, a carrier and its escorts will not have any impact on the flow of drugs. Even if that were their mission, it is perhaps the least cost effective method ever devised by any human being to stop illicit drugs. (We all know that the only effective way to stop the flow of drugs is to stop the demand for them. To stop the demand, we need to improve the social safety net and our health services, especially mental health. Instead they plan to cut them.)
So why are they doing this? One, because they can. Trump gets off on being able to show his power. Two, I think something larger and far more dangerous is afoot. My thinking on this is not clear, but I am trying to connect the dots as are other Americans that spend time thinking about this.
First, remember the implementation of the Alien Enemies Act to deport alleged members of Tren de Aragua, the alleged gang allegedly connected to the president of Venezuela. They, the Venezuelan president, and the alleged drug boat personnel have all been declared terrorists. The president will use this fig leaf to attack Venezuela (and perhaps Colombia as he has been whining about their president too) and assert that he is wiping out narco-terrorists. Think about the fact as well that Trump has already put American troops onto the streets of American cities in places he does not like. He wants to put more there and elsewhere including actual, regular combat troops. Remember that he talks about “the enemy within” and how they are as dangerous as any foreign terrorists. He calls those that he considers his enemies (anyone that doesn’t agree with him) “domestic terrorists” and that the Democrats are an “extremist organization” among other demeaning and demonizing terms. I have already written about the National Security Presidential Memorandum 7 (NSPM-7) that outlines the steps that Trump wants to take against “Antifa” and “domestic terrorist organizations” by using broad and vague language that prohibits dissent and severely impacts our First Amendment right to protest. It asserts that anyone that espouses “extremism on migration, race and gender,” in other words anyone that disagrees with him, or does not match his view of “traditional American views on family, religion, and morality” is to be investigated and perhaps prosecuted.
As I look at those dots, I become increasingly concerned. I hope not paranoid, but to me the warning lights are blinking bright red and sirens are blaring. He is setting a precedent in Latin America that he can and will use the military to eliminate anyone he deems a terrorist. Why not in the U.S. as well?
Remember that the powers behind Trump’s throne are Stephen Miller and Russel Vought, the same two men that are the primary architects of Project 2025. They are well on their way to attaining their goals. Miller and Vought continue to assert that Trump has plenary authority to do whatever he wants. Absolute power. If you oppose their plans, as did Governor J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) recently, he will accuse you of “seditious conspiracy.”
Put over all of it that MAGA legislators all over the country are trying to gerrymander their House of Representatives districts to eliminate districts that voted for Democrats and thus keep control of the House. Texas succeeded in doing so and there are many more working on doing the same. That is the first sign that the 2026 elections, if held, are going to be anything but free and fair. Indeed, Speaker “Little Mikey” Johnson has declared that no Republican Representatives should return to Washington for the fourth straight week. They are getting paid during the shutdown to sit home and do nothing. Talk about freeloaders living off the public dole. Perhaps they will never return. As it is, Trump was quoted as saying “I’m the president and the Speaker,” according to two anonymous sources from within the White House.
We find ourselves in this predicament for a variety of reasons. Let us not let it happen because it is impossible to imagine that it can happen here. It is happening here. The entire picture to me looks like Trump wants to sit in his new bunker, direct the military to kill anyone he deems disloyal and ensconce himself and his cronies in power for as long as they can illegally keep it.
You Might Be A Terrorist In Trump’s America
Posted: October 14, 2025 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: Antifa, Discharge Petition, Domestic Terrorism, Donald Trump, Government Shutdown, history, MAGA, No Kings Day, Project 2025, The Epstein Files, Trump 2 CommentsAnd all I ever hear about is Aunt Tifa. The president, the people in Congress, all the Republicans are constantly talking about Aunt Tifa. What has she done? Why is she always in the news? I don’t get it.
The word is Antifa.
Oh. Never mind.
— With apologies to Gilda Radner as the character Emily Litella on Saturday Night Live
The late Gilda Radner was one of the best actors on the original Saturday Night Live (SNL). She captured her characters brilliantly and always made me laugh. Unfortunately, the current administration’s fixation on Antifa is no laughing matter. Antifa is short for anti-fascist. In the broadest strokes, anyone that opposes fascism is a part of Antifa. It has no organizational structure, no organized funding, no designated leaders or a chain of command. It is more of an idea. There are people who simply do not want to see authoritarianism replace our Republic. Yet, Trump and his administration and MAGA followers in Congress have come to use the phrase as a substitute for anyone that disagrees with Trump’s policies and actions. They equate it to domestic terrorism. They must be really afraid of the people that elected them.
National Security Presidential Memorandum 7 (NSPM-7) Countering Domestic Terrorism and Organized Political Violence, signed by Trump on 25 September 2025, provides the cover for the federal government to investigate, surveil, or apprehend anyone that they deem as being “Antifa” — or in other words, anyone against Trump’s view of the country’s future.
Citing the murder of Charlie Kirk and other violent acts against MAGA supporters — but not the murders of Democrat politicians or supporters — the president directs that a Joint Terrorist Task Force (JTTF) be formed, bringing in elements from all of the relevant federal agencies, in order to stop political violence as he defines it. Trump thinks, or at least asserts, that there is an organized effort to oppose him through violence. As the NSPM says:
“This political violence is not a series of isolated incidents and does not emerge organically. Instead, it is a culmination of sophisticated, organized campaigns of targeted intimidation, radicalization, threats, and violence designed to silence opposing speech, limit political activity, change or direct policy outcomes, and prevent the functioning of a democratic society. A new law enforcement strategy that investigates all participants in these criminal and terroristic conspiracies — including the organized structures, networks, entities, organizations, funding sources, and predicate actions behind them — is required.“
Under the terms of NSPM-7, which directly mentions Antifa, the definition of “terroristic activities” is described as the following:
“This “anti-fascist” lie has become the organizing rallying cry used by domestic terrorists to wage a violent assault against democratic institutions, constitutional rights, and fundamental American liberties. Common threads animating this violent conduct include anti-Americanism, anti-capitalism, and anti-Christianity; support for the overthrow of the United States Government; extremism on migration, race, and gender; and hostility towards those who hold traditional American views on family, religion, and morality.“
Apparently, dissent is no longer protected by the First Amendment. Under the guidelines, any individual, journalist, non-government organization (NGO) or any entity that opposes the MAGA and Project 2025 agenda is Antifa and therefore a suspected terrorist. Dissent is now considered an indicator of pre-terrorist behavior and you could be subject to surveillance or even arrested. Welcome to the America of Trump’s dreams.
Words have meaning and impact which is why they constantly talk about Democrats as the “radical left,” “terrorists,” “the enemy within,” “Marxist, communists and fascists,” and so on. Dehumanize opponents and harden the citizenry until they are numb to his hateful rhetoric. Then bring in the troops to remove all of your perceived enemies. Straight from the Autocrat 101 text book.
No Kings Day is on Saturday 18 October. Back in June, millions of Americans in small towns and big cities came out to peacefully demonstrate their opposition to the Trump regime. The same thing is expected this week. But if you listen to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson it is as an attempt to keep the government shut down (more on the shutdown later). Here are his unhinged views of the gatherings as expressed on Fox News last week:
“We’re so angry about it. I’m a very patient guy, but I have had it with these people. They’re playing games with real people’s lives. The theory we have right now: They have a ‘Hate America’ rally that’s scheduled for October 18 on the National Mall. It’s all the pro-Hamas wing and the antifa people, they’re all coming out. Some of the House Democrats are selling T-shirts for the event. It’s being told to us that they won’t be able to reopen the government until after that rally, ’cuz they can’t face their rabid base. This is serious business hurting real people.… I’m beyond words.”
There are other even more vicious lies about the peaceful rally from administration and MAGA members of Congress. They must really fear the majority of Americans who disapprove of the MAGA, MAHA and Trump policies and actions (I am never sure that Trump actually has policies. He just does whatever pops into his mind at the time. He recently declared that Joe Biden was the president on 6 January 2021. Is that a big lie or his biggest lie? Or is he simply delusional?)
It is interesting to me that they oppose peaceful national rallies against the United States having a king and demanding due process under the law, respect for our fellow citizens, and opposing authoritarianism. As I recall from grade school, this nation was founded on the desire to no longer bend a knee to a king. And while I am at it, what is wrong with Antifa as a concept? There were anti-fascists in the Weimar Republic in Germany in the 1930s. Indeed, we fought an entire world war that was anti-fascist.
Meanwhile the government shutdown continues. There are no plans to bring the House back from a prolonged vacation and no plan to work with Democrats to solve the health care issues. Only stone walling and whining about the Democrats as the enemy. Apparently Speaker Johnson fears the completion of a “Discharge Petition.” Without getting too far down into the rules of the House of Representatives, this is a path for a Representative to bring legislation to the floor without having to go through “regular order” and without the approval of the Speaker and other leaders in the House. It takes a majority of Representatives to literally sign their name to the petition and very rarely succeeds. In this session, that means 218 Representatives need to sign. They have 217 including both Democrats and Republicans. The 218th vote is waiting in the wings. Representative Adelita Grijalva (D- AZ) was elected in a special election weeks ago, but the Speaker claims that because the government is shut down, he cannot swear her into her new job. The petition is to bring legislation to the House floor to vote on releasing the Epstein files. Trump and the MAGA leadership desperately do not want that to happen. (One might wonder why if they are not covering something up?) Thus he will not swear her in. It is unclear how long this can go on, but having the government shut is a convenient excuse. Not to mention that the longer it is closed, the more that Trump and his Project 2025 henchmen Russel Vought and Stephen Miller can expand their power and take ever more extreme actions.
They are trying to press their agenda regardless of its unpopularity. Do not be intimidated. Do not be afraid. Stay peaceful. They are trying to scare anyone that opposes them. They do not understand peaceful protest. They want to rule by fear — physical threats, threats to people’s livelihoods, threats to their families.
I hope to see you on Saturday.
“Slip Sliding Away”

— Donald J. Trump in a victory speech after the Nevada caucus in 2016
While I, and many others, warned of the likely devastation that a second Trump administration would bring, I, at least, while not surprised at what is happening, am shocked at the depth and breadth of his total frontal assault on our democracy. He told us what he would do, but I was not sure that he would be able to pull it off, especially in such a short time frame. Of course, shortsightedly on my part, I did not foresee a complete capitulation from the Congress, giving Trump full leeway to do whatever he pleased.
Only the judicial system has resisted his most unconstitutional moves and we have yet to see how that plays out. Early indications are that the Trump administration expects that the Supreme Court will totally, or mostly, rule in his favor citing the power of the Executive in ways that such power has never been defined in our history. Should the Supreme Court not support the president as being able to do whatever he feels like doing, I fully expect him and his administration to ignore the ruling. We already see that in the way that they ignore and disparage federal judges everyday and claim that a single judge cannot overrule the president, especially when the president is acting in the role of commander-in-chief. As a result, Trump and others in his administration call judges that rule against him, “radical leftists” and that they are issuing “unlawful” orders and that they have “no authority” to block the executive branch. As a result, Trump and many others have called for the impeachment of many of those that have ruled in favor of the Constitution rather than in favor of Trump. As we all know, the federal judges thus far have been issuing temporary restraining orders in order to further understand the government’s case and to have a full hearing, where, you know, actual facts can be presented. If the government does not like the decision, there is recourse to an appeal.
It is worth reminding everyone, because apparently we have collectively had the wool pulled over our eyes, that Executive Orders are not laws. They do not have the force of law unless we react to them as if they are. They are policies. Policies can be over ridden in Congress or deemed unconstitutional by the courts or changed or cancelled with the stroke of a pen. Additionally, an unelected South African co-president has no power under the Constitution.
All of this is emblematic of a plan I did not fully appreciate. When Trump and his Project 2025 acolytes talked about removing the “deep state” I knew what they were talking about but did not appreciate the full extent of what that meant — even though they told us straight out what that meant.
It was not just weeding out allegedly unproductive federal workers or political appointees that tempered Trump’s most weird policies, it meant getting rid of the entire bureaucracy and replacing it with a small cadre of loyalists. Period.
It also meant that “deep state” really meant what they call “elite.” The Project 2025 zealots are using Trump to reshape America. In their view, everyone in a position of power or influence in the fall of 2024 (and for decades before that) were members of the deep state. Universities, cultural institutions, museums, entertainment companies, television programs, public schools, law firms, military organizations, and on and on have all been instruments of the so called radical left. They all must be destroyed and then reimagined to match the Project 2025 vision and become subservient to the all powerful executive. I knew it intellectually, they told us over and over they were going to do it and Trump campaigned on it, but I don’t think I internalized it. In their minds, those around Trump are literally on a mission from God. (We can discuss whether Trump is using them, or they are using Trump. He has no ideological underpinnings. His goals as president are uninhibited power, money and retribution.)
They have attacked nearly every corner of our society and now it is the economy. They want to party like it’s 1897. (Trump has become enamored of our 25th president William McKinley. I am not sure he knows that President McKinley was assassinated in 1901 in Buffalo NY.) He said as much in the Rose Garden when he announced the tariffs aimed at destroying the world order that served us so well for the last eight decades. He clearly has no understanding of history as he claims tariffs made the U.S. prosperous (the Gilded Age — he calls it the Golden Age) and that income taxes implemented in 1913 ruined the country. We can see where this is going. The Robber Barons of his “Golden Age” were the rich, powerful white men that ran the country and became fabulously wealthy on the backs of the working class (much of America). Think the cottages of Newport RI. So, following his logic, he and today’s robber barons (the billionaires with which he has surrounded himself) should run the country. Taxes equal socialism. It is taking money from the rich (billionaires) and giving it to the poor (in the form of roads, public schools, food banks, health care, social security, regulating pollution, and so on.)
Thus, his stated plan to eliminate or reduce income taxes because tariffs will make up the difference. (The math does not work. The US collects just over 3 trillion dollars a year in taxes. The best, some say wildly optimistic, projection by his administration is that tariffs will bring in about 600 billion dollars a year.) However, if one eliminates aid to the poor people overseas, aid to Americans, and just about every social program that we have come to rely upon as a nation — the DOGE-bros at work — that saves money for the billionaires because taxes won’t be needed anymore. (Salaries to the workers are a very tiny fraction of the overall budget, not enough to meet their goal.)
It also saves money so that tax dollars can go to subsidizing Trump’s weekly golf outings at his own courses. So far he has spent 19 of his 74 days in office golfing (just over 25% of his time as president this term), at a cost of roughly 28 million dollars. So far.
At the end of the 19th century, Trump believes, the US got along quite nicely, thank you, without any entangling trade or security or military alignments. Why do we need them now? Let’s see how many of our friends and allies we can drive away from us. America First! We don’t need allies or trading partners. Of course we should go back to that era where most people had no running water, there was rampant disease, the lack of regulations resulted in the deaths of countless workers on the job, we built the Panama Canal (by God!) at the cost of thousands of lives, and the maximum range of weapons was about three miles. Just like now!
Whether through ignorance or Manifest Destiny, Trump’s fascination with Greenland shows his basic misunderstanding of a lot. Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. Denmark is in NATO. The US is in NATO. An attack on one is an attack on all. There is a 1951 treaty between Denmark and the US for the defense of Greenland. If he is actually concerned about the vulnerability of Greenland, there are multiple existing ways to improve its defenses. Since he continues to insist that military force is an option, does he really intend to attack a NATO ally which would precipitate the rest of NATO coming to Denmark’s defense? (Putin is so excited at this idea that he can hardly sit still.)
Do you remember Trump’s logic during the pandemic? He wanted to stop all COVID testing because if there were no tests, there would be no COVID. So of course he still has that logic. Fire all the scientists and there is no climate change. Fire all the medical researchers and we do not need vaccines. Fire all the weather prediction folks and there are no more major storms, therefore it is possible to fire the folks at FEMA. Cut scholarships and poor people won’t have to get a higher education. Privatize K-12 schools and only the right people will be able to send their kids to get a good basic education. Want to go to a museum to learn about your heritage? Want to read a book about our black, brown, Asian and women heroes? Why? There is only one America so fire all the “woke” people working at the Smithsonian Institution and only allow Trump approved exhibitions. Subversive plays at the Kennedy Center? Make Trump the Chairman and only allow what he wants to be performed there. Prestigious law firms are defending people or issues you don’t like? Put out an Executive Order that essentially puts them out of business. Want to control the admissions policies at Ivy League Schools? Withhold billions of dollars in grant money, threaten to put them out of business and they will come around. Want to spread fear among the populace? Start abducting legal residents on the street because they co-authored an opinion piece in a college newspaper a year ago and send them to jail without access to an attorney, in defiance of a court order and hold them without due process. Accusations and “trust us” are enough to put anyone in jail without having committed a crime. And so it goes.
All of these things are happening now.
The most disappointing and discouraging thing of all? Prestigious law firms, Ivy League colleges, news organizations, businesses, groups with the fiscal and physical ability to resist these unconstitutional actions of the executive are caving to the Dear Leader. Not just giving in to Trump, but actually paying out millions of dollars in thinly disguised extortion money. Trump has a pretty good mob boss business going while the Project 2025 folks are achieving their goals. A symbiotic relationship between two forces that are destroying our Republic as we have known it for at least the last 80 years and ignoring the principles that have guided us from our earliest days as a nation.
So far, the dark forces are winning. Our democracy is “slip, sliding away.”

This Is Not Normal
Posted: March 13, 2025 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: Congress, DOGE, Donald Trump, Elon Musk, MAGA Republicans, Oligarchs, Politics, Project 2025, Reductions in Force *RIF), United States Constitution, Vladimir Putin Leave a commentOkay. Time to face up to the facts. We, the citizens of the United States of America are getting screwed. Erstwhile apologists for the 47th president contend that it is “normal” for a new president to bring in his own political appointees to carry out the policies of the new administration. This is true. But let’s not pretend that what is going on in the Trump administration is anywhere close to normal. Besides the fact that many of his cabinet and other Senate approved nominees are unqualified for their jobs, the person making the biggest impact on our government and, indeed, our cherished way of life, is an unelected, unconfirmed South African billionaire that has no idea of how the U.S. government works and has no intention of finding out. Elon Musk and his co-president Trump just do not care about any of it. Under the Trojan horse of eliminating waste, fraud and abuse, they are destroying our federal government resulting in life changing decisions for tens of thousands of Americans and facilitating the possible deaths of tens of thousands more through their drastic cuts to research, science and health programs and the elimination of funding for the basic necessities of life. The secondary and tertiary effects of these decisions include the impact on farmers that had their contracts to supply food programs cut, to the truck drivers and stevedores responsible for getting the supplies to those in need and on and on. The key question is why are they doing this? I’ll get to that below.
With sincere compassion, yesterday Trump opined that he feels “very badly” about those that are losing their jobs, literally overnight, but “many of them don’t work at all. Many of them never showed up to work.” So I guess the lie that the roughly 32,000 federal employees fired (so far) are losers is supposed to make it all okay.
It is hard to define exactly how much alleged waste fraud and abuse has been rescued from government spending so far. Some lies are easy to unravel, others do not make sense but since the data is limited, it is hard to know exactly what is going on. Musk and his DOGE-bros say that they will cut one trillion dollars from the federal budget by the end of the year. The entire federal work force costs about 293 billion dollars or about 4% of the total budget. That includes salaries and benefits. So far DOGE claims to have cut 115 billion dollars. Most experts that are tracking the cuts conclude that is an overestimate by about 80%. For example, they are counting contracts that were already complete or terminated, sometimes as long ago as during the Bush administration, and in one case, they claimed 8 billion dollars in savings until the contractor pointed out that it was really for 8 million. (I’m reminded of Dr, Evil in the Austin Powers movies and the bit about one million vs one billion dollars in ransom. Only this isn’t funny.)
According to the New York Times tracker, so far at least 10,030 people have been fired in agencies scheduled for dismantling, 21,433 probationary employees were let go, along with 428 DEI workers, 33 January 6 coup investigators, 22 government watchdogs (mostly Inspectors General), and 434 other staffers from across the government that came into the crosshairs of Trumpian disdain. Reports claim that the administration wants to eliminate 100,000 employees in the near future. In other words, the chaos we have endured so far is just the beginning.
Maybe the 18 million dollars of taxpayer money Trump spent in his first seven weeks in office to play golf at his own course could have gone to keeping a few park rangers on the job. I do not begrudge presidents having some down time, but really? President Obama often played golf — at the course on Joint Base Andrews just outside of Washington D.C.
All of this is illegal, of course. Not to mention unethical and a direct conflict of interest given Musk’s 38 billion dollars in government contracts (since 2003) and the fact that much of what they are doing is shrouded in secrecy. Under Article I of the Constitution Congress writes the laws that govern our country, including budget authorizations and appropriations. Under Article II, the president executes the duly enacted laws. Mandates from the electorate or not (and in this case not, Trump got less than 50% of the vote not-with-standing his claims), no president can ignore the law and act as his Project 2025 acolytes decree within a “unitary presidency.” To emphasize that point following the attempts by President Richard Nixon to with hold funds for policies with which he disagreed, Congress passed The Impoundment Control Act of 1974 that reiterates Congressional control of government funds. The Act was reinforced in Train v City of New York (1975), a unanimous Supreme Court decision. Indeed, Trump’s first impeachment was based on his impoundment of funds appropriated and authorized to help in the defense of Ukraine.
Today’s Congress, controlled by MAGA Republicans, refuses to exert its authority and instead is letting an unelected billionaire run amok, cutting on a whim whatever he deems “unnecessary,” for fear of the wrath of Trump. They are derelict in their duties and apparently don’t care. In recent meetings between the MAGA Congress and Musk, he told them to call him if they have any questions about what he is doing. He was even so gracious as to give them his phone number. Which, of course, is totally backwards. They should not be asking him to spare their constituents as a favor, they should be delineating what is and what is not acceptable in accordance with already appropriated spending. Congress has conceded their power and responsibilities to one unelected man. The Speaker of the House, second in line to the presidency behind the Vice President wakes up every morning worried that he did not properly respond to something Musk wants. I exaggerate not. This week he is quoted as saying that Musk has the power to “blow the whole thing up” if he doesn’t like or understand a particular action by Congress. As Speaker Johnson explained, “So I spend a lot of time working with all these dials and all these folks, and I just run around all day and make sure everybody’s happy.”
Why are Musk and Trump doing this?
It is hard to know for sure as to what is going on in the scrambled minds of the co-presidents. Their Project 2025 acolytes believe in what they are doing, They are trying to remake the government in their own ideological image of a white Christian nation. I do not think that Trump and Musk care much about that. Their motivation? To me, money.
There are billions and billions of dollars to be had if one has the inside track on government contracts. If the cuts to the Social Security Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs and other agencies and departments make already difficult situations worse, then so much the better. The more dissatisfied the public becomes with these agencies and the more that they are unable to provide the required services, the more the public will clamor for change. And what change would that be, you may ask? Not to make the departments more efficient or productive by upgrading computer systems or hiring more federal workers or even more, supposedly, efficient workers. The answer is to privatize them. Turn them over to the billionaires to run. Turn them into for profit companies that provide the services previously paid for by taxes and instead charge a fee for the service.
Another example is in the dissolution of the Department of Education. Trump and others in his administration continue to extoll the virtues of vouchers for schools. Vouchers mean private schools. Private schools can be for profit schools. There is also the added benefit of being able to decide who does or does not get to go to a particular private school — limited enrollment, you know, to enhance the student-teacher ratio. They can also set their own curriculum, ideological leaning and rules. Taxpayer dollars getting diverted from public schools to private ones, thus over time destroying the public school system? Maybe, But, let the free market reign!
The General Services Administration wants to sell over four hundred properties around the country owned by the federal government, including such buildings as the Justice Department Headquarters, the Social Security Administration Headquarters, and others. Does anyone really think that we do not need centralized offices for administering the government? Of course not. It is a potential scheme. Flood the market with too much real estate, prices drop, billionaires buy up those properties at reduced prices, and then turn around and rent them back to the government at a profit.
All the talk about taking over Greenland, Canada, Ukraine and other seemingly non-sensical ravings? Rare earth minerals and other resources abound. More money! Not for the ordinary Joes, but rather for those billionaires that deserve to reap the benefits because, after all, they are the “Master’s of the Universe” (see the film Bonfires of the Vanities, although in the end it did not work out so well).
Their blueprint may well be the way that the oligarchs took over Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. When the centralized economy crashed, there were willing businessmen that saw an opportunity and took it. Buying up formerly state-controlled industries at dirt cheap prices, they parlayed their gains in an “anything goes” atmosphere during the turmoil following the collapse of the Soviet state. During Boris Yeltsin’s time as the country’s president, in order to keep the government afloat, he turned to the now billionaires profiting from their monopolies. In the course of events, they accumulated massive political power along with their wealth. When Vladimir Putin came to office as Yeltsin’s hand picked successor, he made examples of three of these budding oligarchs, either throwing them in jail or forcing them to leave the country. As a result, the remaining oligarchs got the message. In exchange for their continued wealth, they agreed to support Putin, stay out of politics, and share their wealth with him. If you helped Putin, you became rich. If you opposed him, you were exiled, killed or both.
While the United States is not Russia, this same outline could be the game plan for Trump and his billionaire friends. He helps them get rich as long as they keep him in power and make sure that he gets rich alongside of them. We already see that the Department of Justice is dropping cases against criminals that support Trump while going after businesses and high profile individuals that oppose him. Two months into his term, Trump has already made it quite clear that those that support him will benefit and those that oppose him will suffer. With billions, maybe trillions of dollars afloat throughout the government, privatizing agencies that control that money is a huge opportunity for those that play along.
Am I predicting this? No. Can I see that it is possible? Yes. I take solace in the fact that we are not Russia. The United States has a long tradition that no other country in the world has. I have faith that eventually people will catch on to what is happening and work to stop it. Already there are a multitude of challenges to the Trump/Musk administration in the courts. So far, the challengers are winning and Trump is losing. Unfortunately, the wheels of justice turn slowly. While I think that they have a righteous cause that will eventually prevail, in the meantime countless numbers of our citizens will suffer and some will die because they are unable to access the help that they deserve and that our government promised to give them.
Continue to let your elected officials know that you did not sign up for this. We need to keep shouting our dissatisfaction. The self-anointed Masters of the Universe will not prevail.
The Kremlin Rules!

Trump’s and Vance’s ignorant display in the Oval Office yesterday reflected the essence of this administration — embarrassing, repugnant, vengeful, hypocritical, and extremely dangerous.
Trump invited President Zelenskyy of Ukraine to the White House yesterday. Ostensibly, the reason for the meeting was to discuss the possibility of Ukraine giving the U.S. access to the rare earth minerals believed to be in Ukrainian territory. (No one is exactly sure what or where those valuable minerals actually are as there are almost no mines actively recovering them and the existence of such minerals is based on a decades old map done by surveyors from the Soviet Union.) Instead, President Zelenskyy walked into an apparent ambush by Trump and his MAGA henchman J.D. Vance where they berated and harassed Mr. Zelenskyy while spreading lies and disinformation about the actual situation in Ukraine. (If you have not yet seen it, watch it here. The body language is as important as what is actually said. Or read about it here.) Note that J.D. Vance started the harangue. J.D. is usually not allowed to attend such meetings between Trump and foreign dignitaries (Trump doesn’t want to share the spotlight), which further indicates that he was part of some plan along with Trump to stick it to the Ukrainian. To his credit, Mr. Zelenskyy did not take the bait, stayed calm, and did not yell back at Trump. He did, however, resolutely stick to his position and to try and explain the dire situation that he and his nation are in because of Russian aggression. What really seemed to enrage Trump was when Mr. Zelenskyy tried to explain that no deal with Russia was worth anything without concrete security guarantees. Further, he warned Trump that if he made an unsecured deal with Putin, eventually the U.S. would be in danger. Trump tripped off the line and starting ranting about Hunter Biden, the Russia “hoax” that Putin suffered through, and countless other grievances that had nothing to do with the alleged negotiations at hand. In the end, Trump sounded exactly like a mafia Don threatening retribution on a business that refused to give him a cut. The point was to bully Mr. Zelenskyy in a dual attack in order to get him to concede to a deal to stop the war that would be exclusively favorable to Russia. Mr. Zelenskyy refused. The meeting ended with Trump ordering the press out of the office and saying, “This is going to be great television.”
What does this attack on Mr. Zelenskyy mean? Why would Trump take Russia’s side in the dispute since they are the clear aggressor and the war could end in one day by withdrawing the Russian and North Korean troops? Let’s take a look.
There is a difference between what things are and what things mean. This was a crude and very undiplomatic shouting match aimed at bullying one of our allies in front of the cameras. What it means is that the U.S. is no longer a reliable partner to our NATO allies and our friends around the world. It means that Trump supports the dictator Putin over the leader of a democracy suffering at the hands of an unprovoked aggressor. It means that Trump and Putin will probably work out some kind of “peace” deal without Ukraine having a say. It means that Russia will be encouraged to continue its quest to reestablish the Russian empire. It means that the U.S. is meaningfully less secure.
This is the biggest diplomatic change since the arrival of the United States on the world stage at the start of the Twentieth Century. We are now aligned with Russia who is aligned with China, Iran and North Korea. Countless leaders throughout the free world from Belgium to New Zealand lined up in support of Mr. Zelenskyy and his stance to defend Ukraine.
Where was Secretary of State Marco Rubio, known as an avid anti-Russian hawk? Slumped in a chair next to Vance looking very much like he wished he could disappear. Where was National Security Adviser Mike Waltz who as a Congressman was another anti-Russia, pro-Ukraine supporter? Missing in action. After the dust settled many, many of the MAGA crowd (there are no longer members of the Republican Party in Congress) chose to blame the melt down on Mr. Zelenskyy. They focused on the fact that he did not a wear a suit and tie (he goes everywhere in modified military gear to remind everyone his country is at war) and therefore he was disrespectful and argumentative. (Musk wore a ball cap and t-shirt to a Cabinet meeting in the White House earlier this week, but apparently he can do whatever he wants to do.)
Mr. Rubio and Mr. Waltz should resign. It is clear that they have no influence over Trump or American policy. But of course, they will not. They have been totally coopted. American foreign policy is no longer based on American values and strength. It is now based on the ignorant whims of one man who thinks he is a world player. Instead, he is getting played.
Why is Trump trying to destroy our role in the world by aligning with Putin? I have given this a lot of thought. Trump’s apologists come up with a myriad of reasons as to why he disparages our closest allies and cheers our enemies. He is a businessman. He knows the art of the deal. He is trying to get the EU to step up. It is part of “America First.” Blah, blah blah.
Of course, I am not on the inside so I do not know what takes place behind closed doors but here is what I think. There are only two conceivable scenarios at this point as to why Trump is turning our country over to Putin. The first is that he is actually an agent for Putin. He is trying to destroy our country from within (via Musk and his DOGE bros running amok) and without (throwing our allies under the bus). The Russians cannot believe their great fortune in his returning to the presidency. They are getting a great return on their investment. Can I prove this? Of course not. But there have been rumors since the 1980s that Trump was compromised and groomed to at least be sympathetic to Russia. Given his intellectual and psychological vulnerabilities, and his weakness for flattery, this is not too far fetched. Several uncorroborated reports have had at least four separate former KGB agents at different times reveal that there was a KGB operation, run by the then Czechoslovakian intelligence service, to groom him as a Russian supporter. It is known that many of his real estate deals were with Russian oligarchs buying properties at inflated prices. His first campaign manager Paul Manafort had known ties to Russian oligarchs and intelligence agents. All that said, this to me is the least likely of the options.
It is more likely that he has some simplistic medieval grand view where rich and powerful kings rule the world and their subjects show absolute fealty to him and carry out his every whim. He needs only confer with his fellow “kings” in Russia and China to decide how they will divide the world. Thus we do not need a federal civil service, the king and his lords will run the country. He does not need allies because he consorts with his fellow kings. Rich and powerful men know what is best. What is good for the king is good for the state. “L’etat, c’est moi” — “I am the state” — as King Louis XIV of France is said to have told the French parliament in 1655. In other words, he is an absolute monarch with complete power and not subject to Constitutional limitations. While some of you may think that I am stretching the analogy, and I doubt that Trump knows who Louis XIV was and wouldn’t care anyway, he is approaching his presidency as if he is the absolute ruler. As the absolute ruler he only needs to confer with other absolute rulers.
Whether or not he succeeds with this approach to governing, we will find out. What I am arguing is that this is his mind set and thus he acts in the ways that he does. As I have written in this space countless times, autocrats always tell you what they are going to do. They don’t always succeed, but they are going to try. Trump is telling us exactly what he wants to do and unlike in his first term, he has people around him that are willing to do it.
This is dangerous for many reasons, of course. In this particular case, and what President Zelenskyy was trying to tell Trump, is that he can not trust Putin. Once America repudiates our allies and removes itself from participation with our allies in NATO and elsewhere, Putin and Xi Jinping of China will work together to bring us to our knees. This is one of the things that infuriated Trump during the meeting. Mr. Zelenskyy told Trump that the U.S now “has a nice ocean” to protect us against Russia so we don’t “feel” Russian pressure or threats, but that “you will feel it in the future.” Trump exploded and said “don’t tell us what we’re going to feel.” Completely missing the point, but then he is not that sharp and he is intellectually uncurious. Flattery gets you everything with Trump. He is an easy mark for Putin and Xi who have been in this game for a long time.
The idea of the world being divided into “kingdoms” fits nicely with the Project 2025 playbook being implemented throughout the government as I write. Trump’s world view, Musk’s world view and that of the Project 2025 folks is that rich, powerful men became that way — became “kings” of their domains — because they are smarter and more ruthless and more capable than the rest of us. Therefore it is only logical that they should be in charge. This view is manifesting itself in the foreign policy arena with Ukraine as the example. Ukraine is relatively weak, especially compared to Russia, therefore they should submit and give Russia whatever they want in order to bring “peace” and “save lives.” Of course the Butcher of Bucha will only torture, rape and murder the good citizens of Ukraine should Putin take over.
Remember the day that it all changed. Even if Trump’s plans are thwarted, it will take a generation of hard work before our allies will ever trust us again.

Not the disco age 1984, but rather I mean the 1984 of George Orwell.
“Now I will tell you the answer to my question. It is this. The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently. We are different from the oligarchies of the past in that we know what we are doing.” — George Orwell, 1984
Yes, that George Orwell.
The first two weeks of the new administration have been tumultuous, to state the obvious. It has been very chaotic. This is by design, as I will explain below. It has been nothing less than a full scale assault on the federal government in an attempt to attack from so many directions at once that it is difficult to keep up with all of the illegal, immoral and unethical actions currently underway. But then, we should not be surprised by the actions of a thirty-four time convicted felon and adjudicated sexual abuser who tried to overthrow the duly elected government of the United States. The examples are numerous, but let me highlight a few in order to illustrate the scale of the assault.
“Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.”
― George Orwell, 1984
The Trump Administration is trying to erase every fact surrounding the attempted coup on 6 January 2021. First came the pardons for roughly 1500 criminals that assaulted law enforcement officers and threatened to kill many of our elected officials, including the Speaker of the House and the Vice President. Then came the continual and overbearing claim that the 2020 election was stolen. To date, not one political appointee appearing before the Senate for confirmation would affirm that President Joe Biden won the election, only that he was sworn in as president. They try to convince people that the coup never happened and that the riot was really a love fest. The latest claim is that the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) went “rogue” to weaponize our justice and law enforcement institutions to find and prosecute the alleged patriots who were only trying to “stop the steal.” As of today, the new administration is gutting the DOJ of experienced prosecutors and are pushing to fire about a third of the agents and leaders in the FBI. This is before the nominated Attorney General and FBI Director have been confirmed. Both have promised in public to go after anyone associated with upholding the rule of law on 6 January. Anyone involved, no matter how tangentially, will be fired and perhaps prosecuted. In this process, we are losing a valuable national asset that keeps us safe everyday. If the FBI is in internal turmoil, their energy is not focused on stopping drug dealers or terrorists. If “everyone” is fired there will be a critical loss of knowledge and expertise leaving our country vulnerable. There is an old saying that no one hears about the bomb that didn’t explode. The FBI and other intelligence agencies stop numerous dangerous plots that we never hear about. After the ongoing purge, our enemies will be emboldened to carry out their plans to kill Americans.
Trump fired all but two of the Inspectors General (IGs) in the federal government. These positions were established by Congress to be independent watch dogs in our government departments to weed out waste, fraud and abuse. Many of the IGs he fired were originally appointed during his first term. One can only surmise that they were fired to preclude them from calling out the illegal or unethical actions that his administration anticipates doing.
Last week we all mourned the tragic loss of 67 lives over the Potomac River in a mid-air collision. The nation mourned, except for the President, Vice President, Secretary of Defense (SECDEF) and the Secretary of Transportation (SDOT) who put on the most despicable and racist display I can remember from elected officials in my lifetime. By blaming “DEI” (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs) for the crash they barely concealed their belief that only white males are qualified to pilot aircraft and control air traffic. Trump tried to prove his point by reading from an FAA recruiting website that tried to open jobs to every American. He ridiculed it, blamed the accident on Presidents Obama (!) and Biden and their woke policies. The problem is that the entry from the website that he read aloud was posted during his first term. The racist implication of all of their talk of a “meritocracy” (one could ask if Pete Hegseth got his job as SECDEF because of the merits of his resume — cough cough) lies in what they really mean — that anyone that does not look like them is clearly not qualified to have a high powered job. No women or minorities could possibly be qualified. Worse, they probably took a job away from a white male. If you think I over exaggerate, then please let me point you in the direction of Trump’s Executive Order (E.O.) that rescinds President Lyndon Johnson’s 1965 Executive Order 11246 that prohibits discrimination in hiring for federal jobs. It codified affirmative action to eliminate discrimination and delineated employee protections in hiring. I guess Trump is promoting discrimination now.
“Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.”
― George Orwell, 1984
To take it a step further, NBC reports that several government agencies will no longer acknowledge or celebrate Black History Month, Martin Luther King’s Birthday, Juneteenth, LGBTQ Pride Month, Holocaust Remembrance Day or “other observances.” We will see how that works as some are federal holidays by law. It also reflects that in the name of eliminating “political correctness” and “woke” ideology a very long list of terms have been officially expunged from government documents, websites and information outlets. In their place is a new list of approved words. We have traded one set of PC police to another set that are far more ruthless in weeding out what they do not like.
“But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.”
― George Orwell, 1984
On the farcical level, to satisfy the Dear Leader, two dams in California’s San Joaquin Valley dumped billions of gallons of water that helped no one. Trump was trying to prove that he could have the Army (really the Army Corps of Engineers) “turn the valve” and have water flow to the Los Angeles area to help put out their devastating fires. A perfect photo op to show how he solved California’s water problems. The reality is that there was no way that water could ever be used to help with fires in LA. There is no infrastructure in place to get it to LA. The water in those reservoirs was wasted and was actually reserved for the upcoming summer irrigation needs to support agriculture. I am sure the farmers are thrilled he intervened.
More importantly, and a situation that is extremely troubling, Elon Musk and his acolytes now have access to every computer system in the government connected to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the Treasury Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development (A.I.D.). Musk can now access classified information, the intimate records of every employee in the U.S. government, and every financial transaction made by the federal government. All six trillion dollars of it. That includes every payment to you, me, non-profits, government agencies, etc. etc. And oh yeah, that includes payments to every contractor doing business with the U. S. government, including those that are in direct competition with Musk’s businesses.
I need not remind you that Musk is a civilian with no official government position — not elected not confirmed by the Senate, nothing. He broke cybersecurity laws under the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Worse, they used external hard drives to access the information which raises the chances of importing a virus, ransomware, or to allow disruptive operations.
Not only is Musk not a government official and he has no security clearance, his background and activities are troubling. He is a naturalized citizen who grew up in South Africa under apartheid. Apparently, he had no issue with that racist policy. Among other suspect political activities, he spent 288 million dollars in 2024 on Trump’s campaign and to help other Republican office seekers. He actively supports a German political party known as the Alternative for Germany (AfG), a far right neo-Nazi group gaining influence in German political affairs.
This is a very secretive administration that obfuscates and covers up its illegal activities until they are uncovered by determined journalists or government whistle blowers. We don’t really know all that they are doing. But we do know what they have planned.
Many of the actions taken to date are an attempt to marginalize the House and Senate. And Trump and his accomplices are succeeding. They are breaking civil service laws, appropriation laws and ignoring the Constitution. It is an all out assault on the rule of law and an attempt to totally sideline the Congress. So far they are letting him do it. There is no push back and a lot of “anticipatory obedience”. To date, the Senate has approved all of his nominees even as the majority of Republican Senators know that a lot of the nominees are unqualified and will readily carry out illegal acts if so ordered by their president. (For the first time in American history the nominees that have appeared for confirmation hearings thus far have all refused to answer the question as to whether they would resign rather than carry out an illegal order. They all used some form of the response that they don’t answer questions about “hypotheticals”).
“We do not merely destroy our enemies; we change them.”
― George Orwell, 1984
The uniting thread in all of this is the conservative playbook known as Project 2025. News sources relate that roughly two-thirds of Trump’s E.O.s are straight out of the playbook. Many of the authors that wrote the book are being appointed or approved by the Senate for leading the agencies and departments that they plan to destroy.
Some examples include actions within the DOD that began with the Soviet style erasure of anything having to do with the former Chairman of the Joints Chiefs (CJCS) General Mark Milley and former SECDEF Mark Esper. They have eliminated all references, pictures, biographies or other indications of their work. Gone. Like it never existed. All because they stood up to Trump and his illegal ideas in his first term.
Did you know that it is official DOT policy that money to support transportation upgrades or new projects or anything under the department’s control will go to states and cities with the highest marriage and birth rates? (Use the link in the article to get to the policy — para 5,f,iii — you can’t make this stuff up.) This is part of the Project 2025 playbook that nuclear families with a wife at home having children should be the established norm.
This is what I and others have been saying since last summer. Project 2025 is the plan for our future. They are trying to totally destroy our democracy (and probably our economy — billionaires don’t care about average citizens and they will win in the end) in order to rebuild it in their own image.
Thus chaos.
It could be that it is chaos because Trump likes chaos. He likes to create a crisis so that he can “solve” it and take undue credit for fixing a problem that did not exist before and should not exist now. It could just be incompetence. It is easy to write E.O.s but it is much harder to execute them.
Unfortunately, there are other more nefarious reasons for the chaos and confusion. Trump has been declaring as many “national emergencies” as he can find in order to issue orders that in any other administration would not exist or that would be challenged in court. (Some organizations and state Attorneys General are gearing up to take many of the illegal actions to court. But it is a slow process.)
I think he is trying to create chaos and crises for a purpose. Call it my doomsday scenario. When everything starts to collapse — the government cannot function because of all the firings, the economy is collapsing under the weight of tariffs and other ill conceived actions — he will declare martial law (as he tried to do several times in his first administration when SECDEF Esper and CJCS Milley stopped him). He will simply take over. Only the toadies that have pledged their fealty to him will run departments and agencies (we are nearly there already). They will try to burn it all down and then rebuild it as JD Vance and the other 2025 folks have publicly declared. They are unabashed in their desire and stated goal to create a white nationalist Christian country controlled by white male oligarchs and headed by an autocrat. Trump doesn’t really care about any of it as long as he makes money (he is making a ton of it right now as president in unprecedented ways) and can retain the trappings of power he so dearly loves (Sir!).
There is a lot of talk about elections in 2026 and 2028 and how the Democrats will be taking over because of wide-spread discontent with Trump. How do we know there will be elections? Under a “national emergency” he may declare them deferred until the danger from the crisis is over — which it never will be. Too out there? Too apocalyptic? Why? He and his cult already tried to void an election and take over the government once, why not try it again? He suffered no consequences. Why should he be worried about any future ramifications? He is already making “jokes” about his third term. There is every reason to believe that this time he thinks he can get away with it. Who is going to stop him if Congress is powerless and his toadies control the levers of power?
The Project 2025 playbook is boring. It is also scary. The cadre around Trump are serious. They will pursue their agenda until stopped. They have already gotten the Congress to roll over for them. The court system will be used to over turn some of their more draconian actions but will that really stop them? The courts put an injunction against withholding lawfully appropriated funds and yet the Trump Administration continues to refuse to disburse a wide range of those funds.
I feel sorry for the people that are “too busy” or “too tired” and don’t want to hear about politics, they prefer ignorance. Some day they will realize their mistake. Call your Senator, Congressman and other elected officials and ask them what they are doing to stop the hostile takeover. It seems like right now all that our Senators and Representatives are doing is collecting a paycheck for occupying space. With Musk and his techies already controlling all of the government systems, even that may go away in the future.
“War is peace.
Freedom is slavery.
Ignorance is strength.”

The People Have Spoken
Posted: November 6, 2024 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: 2024 Election, Autocracy, Donald Trump, MAGA, news, Politics, Project 2025, Trump, United States 2 CommentsYesterday the American people chose a new president for the next four years. I have been disappointed by election results in the past, but I have never feared for the future of our democracy like I do now with the election of Donald J. Trump and his mini-me J.D. Vance. I have always been optimistic about people in general and my fellow Americans in particular. That optimism has been shattered. I continue to believe (hope?) that when given a chance, individual Americans will do the right thing for a fellow human being. In the collective, however, my faith in Americans is gone. Apparently, given the results of the vote for president, the majority of Americans only care about looking out for themselves and “getting even” as aggrieved individuals and not about the greater good. Contrary to my previous opinions, as a nation, the majority of us prefer a racist, misogynistic, anti-semitic, egomaniac for president who given his resume could not get a security clearance, enlist in the military, or get hired by any self-respecting corporation. But the American people decided that he should have control of the nuclear launch codes.
There will be much hand-wringing, finger pointing and superficial analysis as to how we ended up here. I’ll let the Monday morning quarterbacks figure all of that out. My first blush opinion is one of two answers. Either the country was not ready for a woman of color as president (indicated by the fact that even in the reddest of states, 9 out of 10 of them had a majority vote to protect women’s reproductive rights and even where a Republican candidate won a Senatorial race they underperformed compared to Trump), or the majority of us wanted an autocrat for president. The truth probably is more complicated than that but the results remain the same. Our country wanted an unstable, mentally ill person as president. There is an old saying that we get the government we deserve. The people have spoken, and here we are. Many of his voters dismissed his most draconian, anti-American proposals as “jokes” or “exaggerations” or believe that the guardrails will keep him from his most dangerous actions. Personally, I think that those folks fooled themselves in order to justify their vote.
As I write, the MAGA party has control of the Senate and a good chance to keep the House of Representatives. If the MAGA party wins the House, there will be no guardrails keeping us on track, given that the Supreme Court has already said that a president is immune from prosecution. A president can only be impeached, which we all know will never happen with a MAGA controlled Congress. Scary.
The sky is not falling today. Or tomorrow. But I fear that a year from now we will be living in an America that none of us can imagine. I hope I am wrong.
My real worry is not that Trump will in fact carry out his “promises made, promises kept” pledge (so many of those promises are blatantly anti-American), but rather I am worried about the people around him who clearly have an agenda. I am not sure Trump even knows how our government works, but Vance and the Project 2025 gang absolutely do. They will meet their goals under Vance before Trump even shows up in the Oval Office about noon for a Big Mac and Diet Coke. Trump will be a willing vessel for anything that benefits him and he will not care much about anything else. Can you say “kleptocracy”? The zealots under Vance with their Project 2025 playbook are chomping at the bit to reshape our democracy to their vision. Robert Kennedy and Elon Musk as cabinet officials? Trump says “yes” and that they can do whatever they want. What could go wrong?
I am profoundly concerned, but I have not given up hope. There are millions of people that feel as I do and I do not think that we will go quietly into the night. It just is not clear to me right now as to the path forward in the darkness. But dawn always follows night.

Thank you, Kevin, for exposing just how violent a second Trump Administration will be. A more direct threat to democracy can rarely be found than exists in the sentiments behind this exclamation. We are supposed to let autocrats have their way with our democracy, and if we resist, then they will use violence to get what they want.
I intended to write a piece outlining the dangers in Project 2025 (found here: https://www.project2025.org/policy/) as exemplified in their roughly 900 page playbook called Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise (found on the same website). It is intended as the foundation of policies to be implemented by the next Trump Administration and is wildly un-American. But check it out for yourself. Trump and his campaign loudly complain that he has no connection to the project and knows nothing about it. Which may be true, because I doubt that Trump has read any policy documents either as president or as a candidate. Regardless, at least 140 former Trump administration and campaign officials worked on the project including six former Cabinet Secretaries, four nominated Ambassadors and his former deputy chief of staff.
Instead of going blow by blow through the radical ideas espoused as future policies, the bigger picture is important as we see the stark differences between the campaigns of the two major party nominees. Project 2025 is really about people. There is a cliche in Washington that “personnel is policy.” To implement their plan, the forces behind the project intend to use a presidential Executive Order to change the status of over 10,000 government jobs from civil service positions to political appointees, firing all of those long time government employees. This is the way they plan to eliminate the “deep state” and put in place people that have pledged their support to Trump, not to the Constitution, whatever they may claim. This is the key step to creating an autocratic regime. If he is the president, Trump plans to pull in all independent and semi-independent departments, agencies, and commissions and place them under his direct control. The intent is to weaponize the government to go after those that he thinks are his enemies and to pursue policies that personally benefit him.
There will be no more guardrails to uphold our democratic tradition. If you think I am exaggerating, think about this. The Supreme Court this summer declared in Trump v United States that the president is immune from prosecution for any official act taken in office. They did not delineate the extent of “official acts” (a problem, but they left it to themselves to decide in the future what constitutes an official act). They did say that it was inherent in the Constitution that a president was immune from actions taken under the “core powers” delineated in that document. They also articulated two important additional cracks in the guardrails. Any official act is still immune to prosecution even if the president did not have any evidence of malfeasance or simply had bad intentions when, for instance, ordering the Attorney General to prosecute any of his political opponents. Additionally, they declared a president’s right to pardon anyone as “absolute.” Thus, the then thought ridiculous example of a president ordering SEAL Team Six to kill his political rivals and then pardoning them is no longer ridiculous, as Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote in her dissenting opinion on the case. The president would be immune from prosecution because one core power is his ability to control the military as commander-in-chief. Remember that Trump wanted to use the Insurrection Act to put down demonstrators through military force and to help to keep himself in power in January 2021. Now he will be immune if he tries it again.
The Supreme Court, in my view, is no longer a trustworthy guardrail. Besides, does one really think that in the future Trump will abide by a Supreme Court ruling he does not like? Especially with a bureaucracy behind him that has only one goal in mind, keeping Trump in power? His favorite president is Andrew Jackson who ignored a Supreme Court decision in the 1831 case of Worcester v Georgia. The result was the “Trail of Tears” or the forcible relocation of Native Americans to western reservations. To me that sounds just a little too close to Trump’s promise to round up millions of immigrants, put them in camps, and then send them “back.” The courts in general are suspect when a Trump appointed federal judge threw out the case against him for stealing top secret war plans, nuclear information and other classified documents. Not because of the facts of the case but for some unprecedented legal finding about procedure that legal scholars had no idea was a thing. We are on flimsy ground.
Personally, I think that there are actually three campaigns underway. It is not Democrat vs. Republican vying for the presidency. It is a coalition in favor of democracy (quite the big tent when it stretches from Senator Elizabeth Warren (MA) to former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney) led by Vice President Kamala Harris against the MAGA autocrat wannabes led by Trump. The third campaign? It is the not-so hidden agenda of the Project 2025 folks that want to take our country back to a time when women stayed home in marriages (whether or not they were loved or even safe) to raise kids, minorities knew their place (and it wasn’t in positions of power or even voting), and rich white Christian males ruled over all. Sometimes benevolently, most times in their own interest. This group’s standard bearer is Senator J.D. Vance (OH) the Vice Presidential nominee.
Trump is merely a figure head for the movement. Trump is only interested in making money and keeping himself out of jail. He will do anything the movement wants as long as he keeps the trappings of the presidency (he really likes being called “Sir!”) and anything that helps him personally. He has no real policy agenda, merely a collection of slogans and insults. Vance is the hit man. He was the personal choice of those behind the Project 2025 movement. They were over the moon when he was selected as the Vice Presidential nominee precisely because he was firmly in their camp, would pick up the slack when Trump is writing love letters to Kim Jong Un, actually run the government (with the new tens of thousands of devotees in place) and, let’s face it, Trump is an older man in generally poor mental and physical health, and should he not finish out his term, J.D. is ready to go.
How millions of Americans support a man running for the presidency who is a 34 time convicted felon, been adjudicated as a sex abuser, twice impeached for abusing his office, led a multi-pronged conspiracy to overthrow a free and fair election to keep himself in power and tells lies with real consequences such as the suffering in Springfield Ohio where he lied about the legal immigrants in that city, is beyond me. I honestly cannot get my head around it. We know they are lies because this week on the Sunday talk shows good old J.D. said so. “If I have to create stories” to get attention from the media then, he promised, he is going to continue to do so. (From watching him on TV I’m not too sure how quick on his feet he may be. The first rule of fake news is to deny that it is fake news.)
Trump is totally and completely unqualified to even be mentioned in the same sentence as “president.” He could not enlist in the military and he could not get a security clearance given his background. Yet, here we are. The real story is the one many Americans are too sanguine to believe. They think that because we saved our democracy in 2021 that we will always have it rather than thinking about how those that tried to hijack our democracy have now had some practice and four years to get it straight. The danger is incremental and thus harder to identify. As a student and as an adult I always thought about how Germans in the early 1930’s allowed their democracy to be stolen. It did not happen over night. It was years of small changes and diminished freedoms until suddenly it was too late. And, no, I am not comparing anyone or anything to the Nazis. At least not yet. More like the fascists in Italy in the 1930s. We need to recognize the danger and especially take a close look at that second campaign using Trump as their cover. Those folks are not going away even if Trump loses the election. Besides, the whole lot of the MAGA/Project 2025 crowd are already telegraphing that they will not accept any outcome other than their own victory. It isn’t going to be pretty.
I worry when I hear things like this. A news reporter asked a group of voters in a focus group about Trump’s pronouncements that he will be a dictator on day one and that after this election we won’t have to vote anymore and all the other statements he has made that he will rule as an autocrat. The focus group’s consensus was that worries about losing our democracy are just hyperbole to “scare” people and are just Democrat’s campaign talking points. They concluded that as long as they could vote, we would have a democracy. Hmmmm. I suppose Russia really is a democracy along with the People’s Republic of China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Not only do they vote but they even have the word “republic” in their country’s name!
What could go wrong?
Immigration — MAGA Style

“On day one, we will terminate every open border policy of the Biden Administration and begin the largest deportation in American history starting with all of the criminals pouring in. Our local police will tell us where they are.”
— Donald J. Trump, Green Bay Wisconsin on 2 April 2024 referring to immigrants
Unfortunately, by now we are, perhaps too much so, used to the vile rhetoric of the presumed Republican nominee for president. The problem is, it is not just rhetoric. He and his minions that will populate the cabinet of a second Trump Administration are serious about doing exactly what he says. It is not rhetoric, it is a plan of action. Stephen Miller, Trump’s former senior adviser in the first administration, is in line to assume another senior position in a second term and will support Trump’s authoritarian tendencies and push harsh immigration policies to end what he calls “the equity cult.” For those that think such talk is an exaggeration or a fiction created by the media, may I recommend some light reading in the form of the Project 2025 900 page policy book Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise. Chapter Five addresses immigration and other Department of Homeland Security issues. As a reminder, Project 2025, under the leadership of the Heritage Foundation, lays out the “Playbook”, policy, personnel, and training for a MAGA take over of the federal government. It is no joke. In 2016, Trump and his supporters were ill-prepared to lead and did not have a deep group of supporters to place in key government positions. It will be different if there is a second time around.
Immigration is a legitimate issue. Democrats agree that measures must be adopted to ease tensions on the border and to better handle the influx of peoples from around the world. They even worked with Republicans to come up with, according to both Democrats and Republicans, the most comprehensive immigration reform measure in the U.S. in at least forty years. Trump said no and his MAGA acolytes shut it down. They are not interested in solving the problem, merely exploiting it as a campaign issue. They have their own plan.
When Trump and his loyal henchmen talk about “the largest deportation in American history” what do they really mean? He and his future government officials look to the 1954 U.S. government deportation effort known as Operation Wetback as their guiding light. That is not the slang term for it, that is the official name of the operation. One can already tell that if a racial slur is involved, it is probably not going to be an easygoing methodology for returning immigrants to their native lands. To date, it is the largest deportation effort in U.S. history involving as many as 1.2 million people (the exact number is unclear as some people were deported more than once). The intent was to remove Mexican immigrants from the U.S. through wide-scale roundups of people, many of whom legally entered the U.S. and some who were actually U.S. citizens, and loading them on buses, trains, planes and ships to unceremoniously dump them in Mexico — often in areas totally unfamiliar to those being deported. It is a lot easier to do this if one believes that Mexicans are “not humans, they’re animals.” At the time of Operation Wetback, Mexicans were portrayed as “dirty, disease-bearing and irresponsible” here to “steal jobs” from Americans. Sound familiar?
The genesis of the operation is a bit complicated. During World War II, the U.S. suffered from a labor shortage as our citizens joined the military and worked in war production factories to stave off fascism. In 1942, the U.S. and Mexico agreed to implement the U.S.-Mexico Farm Labor Program also known as Operation Bracero. In exchange for guaranteed wages and humane treatment, farm workers were legally allowed into the country on temporary visas. Between 1942 and 1964 an estimated 4.2 Mexican workers entered the country legally to work in the Operation. Unfortunately, but still the norm today, some employers did not want to pay the agreed upon (higher) wages under the program, especially in Texas. Conversely, the Mexican government did not want their laborers working in Texas due to the deep discrimination against, and ill-treatment of, Mexican citizens, so Texas was not included in the Bracero program. (Most of the legal workers went to California.) However, Texas did import significant numbers of Mexican workers — illegally and at significantly lower wages — to which the federal and state governments turned a blind eye for many years. (The undocumented immigrants were said to have swum across the Rio Grande, thus the derogatory term “wetbacks” which came to be used as a racial epithet for any Latino worker.)
By 1953 the economic aspects of Texas farmers paying their workers substantially less than those in other states created an unfair advantage. Besides, many Americans were tired of being “over run” by Mexican immigrants whether they were legal or not. Initially the plan called for the National Guard to be used to conduct massive round ups of people (also what Stephen Miller wants to do in 2025). President Eisenhower rejected that plan citing the Posse Comitatus Act which precludes the military from civil law enforcement. In 1954, the Border Patrol under Harlon B. Carter and the Immigration and Naturalization Service under General Joseph Swing used their own agents in military style raids to sweep farms and factories and other locations employing the workers. Many were kept in the desert in wire fenced “concentration camps” while awaiting deportation. Some had their heads shaved — supposedly for hygiene purposes but really to humiliate those in captivity. Lives were uprooted, families separated and some Mexican workers died under the conditions they suffered after being rounded up and held awaiting deportation.
This is the model that MAGA Republicans promise to emulate — nay, exceed — as they promise to round up “the animals” and conduct the “largest deportation in American history.” When asked in a 2016 CNN interview if he thought that Operation Wetback was a “shameful chapter in American history” Trump replied that “some people do, some people think it was a very effective chapter. It was very successful, everyone said. So, I mean, that’s the way it is.” It most emphatically should not be the way it is.
